|Support Mike's Run for Rowland Hall||
This June, Middle School teacher Mike Roberts will run 35 miles a day, from Rowland Hall to Las Vegas...yes, Nevada...with hopes of raising $35,000 in support of the Capital Campaign.
WAIT! You're Doing What?
This June, I’m going to run from Rowland Hall to Las Vegas.
When people hear about this, they usually have lots of questions. Below is an example of the conversation that generally follows after hearing my idea…
How far is that?
The route I’m taking will be around 475 miles, depending on how many times I get lost.
How many people are running in this crazy race?
One…me. See, it’s not a race. It’s just me going out for a couple weeks of running.
So you’re going to be by yourself that whole time? Aren’t you scared?
I’ll have a support crew that rotates in and out throughout the trip. They will make sure I eat and shower and stuff. And yes, I’m way scared. It’s 475 miles!
Are you just going to run along the highway all the way down?
Nope. The highway patrol usually frowns upon people running on the highway. I’ll be running on frontage and side roads.
And you’re doing this because…
I always talk to my students about pushing themselves beyond their perceived limits, and I thought this was a way for me to lead by example. Plus, it gives me a chance to combine two things I love…running and Vegas!
How does Rowland Hall tie into this?
With the Steiner campus on its way, I thought this would be a cool way to raise some money to help build it. I figure if I’m running 35 miles a day, asking for $35,000 seems to make sense. I know it’s a lot of money, but 475 miles is a long way to run!
I like to run…Can I run some of it with you? But I'm not very fast!
Yes. In fact, that would be awesome. I’d love as much company as I get! And I’m not going to be running fast, either. Since I won’t have much time to fully recover each day, slow and steady is the mantra. Like ultra-marathoner Karl Meltzer says, you don’t have to run fast, you just have to run all day.
So what are you going to do when you finally get to Las Vegas?
Rest for a day or two, then hop in the car and come back to Salt Lake.
Man, that’s crazy.
Yes…Yes it is.
How can I support you on your journey and Rowland Hall's Capital Campaign for the new Steiner Campus at the same time? You can do so financially by donating whatever you can, every little bit helps! Or, if you want to run with me for a bit, send me an email...I’ll give you all the fun details of when and where.
